Desire to accumulate

Have you ever observed that we live with a desire to accumulate; we want to accumulate money, property, popularity, pleasurable things...etc. Where does this desire come from or why there is this desire in life to accumulate more and more? Is not this desire the root behind all corruption? There is this deep hidden fear in us to be nobody, and this fear is the catalyst behind the process of accumulation. Unfortunately we don't know the utter beauty of being simple and to be anonymous. Please try to observe in you or in the society the consequences for the desire to accumulate, for example how a politician is trying to acquire land, money in corrupted ways. It doesn't mean you should not earn your livelihood or you should not have any property, but without the desire for more. If you observe without the desire for more or the desire for end result in mind, the mind is more energetic and more intelligent. This "more" is in many forms a country, actor, politician, student, employee, social organization trying to be No 1 is the form of more. My question is can't you work most effectively without the desire to be on the top position? And I think surely it is possible when you love what you are doing not when you are in love with only the end result.
